Mike is a native Oregonian raised on a farm near Hillsboro. He went to high school at Central Catholic in Portland and college at the University of Portland. He earned a Masters in Engineering from Stanford University.
Mike is married to Rev. Cheri Unger and they have three children – Joe, Rachel and Karen -- and three grandchildren – James, Alex and Kelly.
Mike has had a forty year career in electrical engineering being a member of three consulting firms specializing in providing services to electric utilities generally located in the Pacific Northwest. He was President of Engineering and Design Associates for five years and then started and owned Power System Engineers, Inc. for 10 years. In 2005, Mike sold PSE to Elcon Associates and currently works at this firm as a Principal Electrical Engineer. Mike also served as President of the Consulting Engineers Council of Oregon.
Being active in environmental related groups for some time, Mike's main area of concern is global warming. He was instrumental in the formation of a group of engineers called Engineers for a Sustainable Future (ESF), its purpose being to promote sustainable practices with an emphasis on technology through an education program of members, government officials and the general public.
Mike served on the NTCSL Board of Trustees for two years and as Treasurer for one year. He is a founding member of the choir. He is now chair of the NTCSL Environmental Team (ET) which works to promote a sustainability culture within the NTCSL community.
